Serena currently supports two charitable organisations Plan Australia, and the Serena Brooke Fund through the Orange County Community Foundation.
Serena sponsors two children through Plan Australia. Her sponsored children live in Peru and Bangladesh. Serena visited her sponsored child in Peru in October 2008, the trip was covered by local media, Plan Peru and Plan Australia.
Plan in Australia is part of Plan globally. We are one of the world’s largest community development organisations committed to ending child poverty.
We work with children, their families and communities in 49 countries in Asia, Africa and Central and South America. Plan helps communities to help themselves, so that children have opportunities to develop into healthy, educated adults.
Plan has no religious or political affiliations, and respects and celebrates people’s right to cultural diversity and autonomy.
Our child centered community development approach involves children as equal partners in changing their future. In this way, children are not passive recipients of compassion but agents of change with us in community development.
Plan recognises that making real improvements in childrens lives means working both locally and globally on the underlying causes of poverty in the developing world.
Plan is also a member of the MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY coalition and works within Australia to raise awareness of the issues of poverty in the developing world and what we can all do to be a part of the solution.
The Serena Brooke Fund was established through the Orange County Community Foundation in 2001 for public recreational, educational and charitable purposes. The Serena Brooke Fund ran until 2009, with the last donation of $12500 being put towards Plan Australia’s Vulnerable Group Feeding Program in Zimbabwe.
Contributions to this fund had principally been raised through the ‘Serena Brooke Charity Surf Day’ events, held in Huntington Beach, CA and Jacksonville Beach, FL. Since it’s inception, these charitable events had been successful at raising funds for non-profit organisations that provide critical services for at-risk youth. During the years that the fund was running $50,000 had been granted to agencies such as the Orange County Child Abuse Prevention Centre, CSP Youth Shelters, Breast Cancer Research, Plan Australia, and Surfrider Foundation.
Serena used her surfing talent and expertise to help the charitable causes she’s most passionate about, including child abuse prevention and providing shelter and resources for women and children in need.
“I want to make a positive impact on some of the kids that are in difficult situations. Maybe it’s something small, but it makes a difference. It’s a win-win situation. People get to have a good time and learn how to surf. Everyone who takes part is contributing toward a good cause.”
The mission of the Orange County Community Foundation is to encourage, support and facilitate philanthropy in Orange County through donor services and community partnerships. Supporting the Serena Brooke Fund is an important way to fulfil our mission.
Community foundations make grants to charities from funds established by individuals, families, businesses and others that want to help meet the needs of their local community.
It is a tax-exempt public charity created by the people Orange County to act as a solid platform for building a strong community.
